Preventing Bad Breath

simple and effective ways to prevent bad breath

Bad breath can spoil many relations and end up people in embarrassing situations. Bad breath, also called halitosis, can make social life difficult, cause anxiety, and bring down the confidence level and self-esteem. It can happen at any age.

The most common reason for bad breath is the buildup of bacteria in the mouth that break down food particles. This will lead to foul odours or gases that smell bad. Similarly, food with strong odour (like garlic or onions), brushing and flossing or even mouthwash, can only cover up the odour only for a short period. The bad odour will remain until the body processes the food.

Persistent bad smell or a bad taste in the mouth can also mean disease of the gum or periodontal. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria increases the formation of toxins and this can lead to damage the gums and jawbone.

Steps to Prevent Bad Breath

There are some simple and effective ways to counter bacteria build-up and bad breath.

Better Oral Hygiene

It is better to have a good oral hygiene ingrained into the daily schedule. Children must be trained to practice this.

Trapped food

Food particles trapped between teeth can be led to bacteria build up and eventually bad breath. Proper brushing and washing can prevent these.

Smoking

Smoking is one of the main reasons for bad breath. Just as other serious health hazards, it can lead to the foul odour as well.

Alcohol

By their nature, alcohol generated bad smell. Besides that, alcohol is diuretic in nature and dries up the mouth. This leads to a reduction in saliva production, which in turn leads to the growth of odour-causing bacteria.Alcohol can also lead to heartburn and acid reflux, which are reasons for bad breath.

Bad breath can be effectively prevented through many such simple steps. It will enhance the social relations and public presentations.
