Natural Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus could be a major irritant, as the infection gets in through cracks in the nail or cuts in the skin. It often leads to discoloration or thickening of the toenail. In acute cases, the infection can also cause pain.

Common Reasons behind Toenail Fungus

The main reason for toenail fungus is dampness of the toe, caused mostly by constant sweating due to covered footwear. If not treated properly, the infection can spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails.
Infected nails are usually become thicker than normal ones and become warped or oddly shaped. The infection can also make the toenails break easily. Nails with fungus might appear yellowish or with white dots. In severe cases, the infection can make nail detach from the bed and spread to the skin around the nail.
Men are more prone to the infection than women. Other common causes are age, diabetes, weaker immune system, smoking and family history. Those in constant touch with water are more likely to get the infection.

Common Remedies for Toenail Fungus


Garlic is the most common remedy that one can have for toenail fungus.It has a chemical content called ajoene, which is found to be very effective against the fungal infection.
The sustained way is to get a foot bath in lukewarm water with seven to eight finely crush garlic cloves in it. The infected area has to be soaked for half an hour, pat dried and some petroleum jelly applied to it. This has to be repeated daily, once till the infection is over.
Other ways of doing it are mixing two to three freshly crushed garlic cloves to olive oil and applying the mixture on the affected area with a cotton ball. This has to be kept on the spot with a gauze bandage and rinsed after some time. Intake of one or two cloves of garlic can also help in fighting the infection.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda is also effective in arresting the spread of the fungus, though it cannot cure the ailment. A paste of two parts of baking soda in one part of warm water has to be applied on the infected area, left thus for 20 minutes and rinsed off. On the other hand, a footbath with four tablespoons of baking soda, one cup of white vinegar and two to three cups of lukewarm water should be done for 15 minutes. Any of these twice a day for about a month can bring down the intensity of the infection.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is found to be the most effective in fighting back toenail fungus. A footbath with equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and lukewarm water for half an hour or a scrub with the thick paste made out of one tablespoon of coarsely ground rice flour and two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can do the magic.
